The Cedar Lake Public Works Department has dumpsters available to residents Mondays through Fridays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Since this is a taxpayer funded service, we ask that visitors please stop in the office to be checked-in, presenting identification or a utility bill, so that non-residents do not take advantage of this service.

Items accepted for disposal include but are not limited to furniture, carpet, wood and appliances. If you have a question about a specific item, please call the Public Works office at 219-374-7478.
Items that are not accepted include roofing materials, concrete, bricks, railroad ties as well as hazardous materials such as paints, oils, fuels, fluorescent bulbs, ammunition… however, the Lake County Solid Waste Management District does accept hazardous materials at various locations throughout the year. Public Works also has dumpsters specifically for tires and metal recycling. These dumpsters are available to all Lake County, IN residents as well as our recycling bins you see when you enter the Public Works facility.
The drop-off recycling bins are provided by the Lake County Solid Waste Management District. In regards to these recycling bins as stated on the Lake County Solid Waste Management District’s website:
“Lake County residents and businesses also have the option to drop off their recyclables at several recycling centers throughout the county. Recycle anytime, but we prefer if you use the drop-off centers between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.,Monday through Saturday. On Sundays and holidays we rest, too! The centers accept: newspaper, cardboard, aluminum and steel cans; clear, brown and green glass bottles; plastic milk and water bottles, pop bottles and colored detergent bottles.”

Electronic waste is also collected here at Public Works. This is another service offered by the Lake County Solid Waste Management District and is available during regular business hours: Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Any unwanted branches or yard waste is able to be disposed of here (again, during regular business hours). Yard waste includes leaves, bushes and grass clippings.
Public Works has free firewood for residents:
- During regular business hours (Monday through Friday from 7am-3pm)
- No use of equipment (chainsaws, axes) is permitted
- Sign in Public Works main office upon each visit
- Take as much as you want!
